Gurdaspur

Gurdaspur was founded by Guriya Ji in the beginning of 17th century. On his name, this city was named as Gurdaspur. Little is known about the ancient history of the district except a few antiquities like the rock temples at Mukheshwar. Gurdaspur district is the northern most district of Punjab. It falls in the Jalandhar division and is sandwitched between river Ravi and Beas.
Introduction
The city is famous for the Jhula Mahal, which has a historic gurudwara with a foot print of Guru Nanak Dev Ji on its wall. There are also the relics of Rang Mahal, a places built by Raja Sher Singh.

AROUD GURDASPUR
BATALA (32 kms.)
It is known for the Samadhi of Sati Lakshmi Devi, the wife of Veer Hakikat Rai of Sialkot. Other attraction is the Kandh Sahib Gurudwara.
DERA BABA NANAK (39 kms.)
Guru Nanak Dev ji is said to have spent the last 12 years of his life over here. The clothes he wore during his visit to Mecca are still preserved. Main pilgrim sites are-gurudwara Dera and Chola Sahib. The Maghi Fair held here in January attracts large number of devotes.
DHARIWAL
This industrial centre is renowned for its woollen mills.
DOONG
It is located midway between Shahpur Kandi and Dhar and is known for the ancient Buddhist caves.
KALANUR
Kalanur, the ’Abode of Lord Shiva’ is located on the road from Gurdaspur to Dera Baba Nanak.
Takht-i-Akbari : This masonry platform is said to be the place where Mughal emperor Akbar was coroneted on 14th Feb., 1556. There is a Akbari Masjid nearby.
PANDORI MAHANTAN (12 kms.)
The village is known for the Ragunath Temple, built by the donations of Maharaja Ranjit Singh and other hill Chiefs. The temple walls are adorned with fine frescoes depicting mythological scenes.
PATHANKOT (35 kms.)
The beautiful town is the ’Gateway’ to Jammu & Kashmir and the scenic Kangra valley of Himachal Pradesh.
The 16th century Shahpur Kandi Fort, 7 kms. from Pathankot overlooking the river Ravi, has now been converted into a comfortable rest-house.
Malikpur town near Pathankot is known for India’s leading hydraulic research station.
QADIAN
It lies 19 kms. east of Batala and is the headquarters of the Ahmediya sect of Muslims, founded by Sheikh Ahmed Qadiani in the later part of the 19th century. The town is famous for its exquisite architecture. The towering Minar-i-Qadian. Ahmediya Mosque and the tomb of Sheikh Ahmed Qadiani are the best structures in the town.
Members of Ahmediya sect from all over the world gather here in the last week of December.
SRI HARGOBINDPUR
The Sikh pilgrim site was founded by Guru Arjan Dev and is famous for Shahidi Gurudwara Damdama Sahib.
